Birchbox Celebrates their 5th Birthday - June box review

June 24, 2018

Birchbox UK has turned 5 this month and to celebrate they have sent out a collectible keepsafe tin instead of the usual drawer box. The tin box design is beautiful and tea party themed which is perfect for a British summer time; I personally don't drink tea but love the idea of small cakes and sandwiches with a drink during the summer months or a picnic in the park. I really like the tin design and it will be a lovely keepsake tin for memories or I can pop my favourite biscuits in it. To add to the tea party theme, inside Birchbox this June was an extra treat of Whittard of Chelsea teabags which I will be passing along to my mum who is a tea drinker; I'm sure she will enjoy the tea bags.

The contents this month was a varied mix of products from makeup to hair care to sun cream which is very fitting for the beautiful weather we've been getting these past few weeks; yay the UK finally gets a summer! I received a total of 5 products, one of which was a full size product worth £12.99 and was the item I was able to choose this month too.

Ella Eden - Compact Eyeshadow in shade Julia - RRP £12.99 - full size
A brand I've never heard off until now and its been fun to test a new brand this month. This eyeshadow is a soft pink shade which adds a little sparkle when applied, I've been using it on my inner eyes to highlight them when using darker shades on the rest of my eyelids. The eyeshadow itself is a little soft to work with but using my finger or a damp brush to apply makes application a little easier. I do like the shade and the compact is small enough to carry around for top-ups during the day or night out which it would more than likely be but I think I'd have to sample more from the brand to be a convert to their products as this eyeshadow is just mediocre in my opinion.

Benefit Cosmetics - POREfessional Pearl Primer - RRP £27.50 - sample size
As a lover of Benefit Cosmetics already I was super excited to sample this Pearl POREfessional, I've used the original POREfessional for some time now and always get good results from Benefit primers. This pearl edition of the primer is as smooth as the original to apply but leaves a subtle glow on my skin so I can get away with just wearing this alone or when I apply my foundation over the top I'm left with a brightening finish. I find applying POREfessional with a brush much nicer than with my fingertips and I also tend to use less product with this method, I like the feel of my skin after I apply this primer; it feels so smooth and looks smooth too which is a bonus for sure!

Lord & Berry - Strobing Highlighter Pencil - RRP £14.00 - mini size
Lord & Berry are always in my makeup bag and they tend to bring easiness to the makeup world all whilst saving us a bit of money as they aren't a really expensive brand in my opinion. This mini pencil leaves a bold highlight once applied, plus how easy is it to apply using a pencil? Adding this to my eye looks, brow bone and upper lip adds that glow that completes a makeup look especially for a big night out or event. The pencil isn't too soft that it smudges but applies were you put it, the glow left behind is pinkish and can be build up for a more intense highlight. The size of this mini is perfect for travelling this summer so its a good time for it to be featured in the box as well.

Polaar - Velvety Sun Fluid Face & Body - RRP £25.00 - travel size
Protecting our skin from harmful sun rays should be a priority for everyone this summer and finding a sun cream in my Birchbox is a welcomed treat this month. I like the size of this tube as it can be put in my pocket or bag for applications on the go and re-applications throughout the day. I actually prefer spray sun creams but anything for a lighter travel bag is right up my street. Polaar are a regular brand in Birchbox and they have some great products including this 30 SPF rated sun protection. This sun cream doesn't leave a sticky residue and isn't shiny either, the scent is quite pleasant and a little goes a long way; I also like that I can use this product on my face and body so I don't need two separate products on my travels.

Number 4 - Jour d'automne Smoothing Balm - RRP £24.50 - sample size
For starters this balm smells amazing and leaves my hair smelling beautiful for days after using it! You got to apply to damp hair then work it through with your fingers then style as normal. The balm is lightweight and doesn't leave a trace on my hair other than smoothing my frizzy hair and making my styling a little easier. I do have frizzy and wavy hair and it needs styling after washing which includes using heat a lot so I use products to protect my hair as well as help my hair so I can style it less. This balm helps to calm the frizz and means I can style my hair with the hairdryer instead of both hairdryer and straighteners so its actually shortened my hair styling time too. For the £24.50 I'd have to spend on a full size version of this Number 4 balm I think I could find an alternative at a more budget price but I've enjoyed trying this high end hair care product.

So Birchbox had 3 make up products this month which makes it a good box in my opinion, I prefer to receive makeup products in my beauty boxes and the other 2 products was fun to use this month too. I think its been an all round good box this month and I will definitely be using the tin to keep things in!
